Singer/bass player. Tayozo spoke to us from his home in Toyko on the ever f
there first trip to Oz.
Munster:, this tour 7 inch via Cheersquad, you have a few diverse
covers, one from the Pretty Things, and another from Science Poption, so I take
it you must have listened to garage round the world from an early age?
Toyozo: From 16, I was into 80s garage rock, also punk rock from the 70s. the Saints, Radio
Birdman and the Ramones, I love them because they are inspired by 60s music. Lipstick
Killers as well, Australian punk rock is a great influence on our sound.
Munster: was Australian music accessible?
Toyozo: Some of it yes, had to dig around a lot of shops to
find it.
Munster: did you grow up on the Back from the Grave Comps as well?
Toyozo: Yeh sure, Nuggets as well. I like one hit wonders, I
love more obscure 60s music.
Munster: I love the gimmick of the matching t shirts, how did
that come about?
Toyozo: That’s our style, there as loud as our voice
Munster: How many times
have you toured overseas?
Toyozo: Before covid four times the States, and three times Europe,
always had had fun.
Munster: I saw you got a lot of 7 inch’s out on various labels
around the world, was it one of those deals where your coming to a place to
play and a local label says lets put out a 7 to promote the tour?
Toyozo: that its. the labels approach us so we have something
to promote I think it’s good as all Japanese labels aren’t interested, so just
overseas labels release our stuff, I don’t know why.
Munster: are there many garage/punk labels in Japan?
Toyozo: Very few, 15-20 years ago there was a few but not anymore,
just majors.
Munster: do you release your own stuff?
Toyozo: No we put it out via label’s
Munster: is there a good garage scene in Tokyo?
Toyozo: In Tokyo there’s a 60s garage punk venue, and a few
bands that keep it going.
Munster: do you play in any other bands?
Toyozo: I play in a band called Angle Face with Fink from Teengenerate,
we have a good following in the States.
